It’s very simple: True Pikes don’t haze.
National Hazing Awareness Week is September 22-29, 2024. Find out what is happening on your campus to increase awareness about why hazing does not belong in the membership experience and GET ENGAGED! Take time to engage your brothers in one of the following opportunities to advance your commitment to the principles and values of Pi Kappa Alpha, as well as preventing hazing within your brotherhood:
- Join your brothers from Utah State and Purdue University as they lead a conversation about how you can keep hazing out of your chapter! The Health & Safety Townhall will be held on Wednesday, September 25th at 7:00 PM Central! Click here to register.
- Share the full message from Stone’s parents, Shari & Cory Foltz, with your brothers. Have a conversation about how Stone’s death has impacted his family, friends, and YOUR Fraternity.
- Engage your brothers in a conversation about being an upstander and speaking up if hazing finds its way into your chapter. Share this video with members and use the facilitator guide to have a conversation about being an upstander and standing up to keep hazing out of the Pi Kappa Alpha experience.
- Watch this critically acclaimed documentary! In HAZING, a 90-minute first-person documentary. The film features the voices of hazing victims, family members of victims, perpetrators, and scholars, providing historical context with the film’s thematic framework: that hazing is a widespread, far-reaching system fueled by tradition, secrecy, groupthink, power and control, and the desire to belong. Register here for access to view the film in the comfort of your own space – no cost.
- Check out this Gordie Center short video on bystander intervention. The video explains how to be an effective bystander in hazing situations using the 5 Ds (direct, distract, delegate, delay, and document).
- Screen this short film with your chapter or host for a leadership conversation in your community! We Don’t Haze helps identify hazing behaviors and offers organization leaders alternative traditions that promote a safer, more positive team-building experience. You can download this 16-minute documentary featuring student voices free of charge here.
- Participate in National GORDIEday, which falls annually on the Thursday, September 28. The goal of National GORDIEday is to educate students on the PUBS signs of alcohol overdose and empower them to intervene when a friend is in distress. Register for the webinar now.
Let us know how you are engaging in the important conversations about putting an end to hazing! Share your pics on social media and tag us, or send us a story to feature in the Shield & Diamond at healthandsafety@pikes.org.
Our insurance provider, Favor and Company, has issued a challenge to non-hazing organizations reminding us that chapters that do not haze can, and should, play a significant role in stopping hazing on campus. You can challenge other fraternities, organizations, and student groups on campus to remember the basic principle that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Find resources to help you meet this challenge here.
Remember your alumni, members of your AAB, and the staff of Pi Kappa Alpha are here to support your efforts to keep hazing out of your chapter or provisional chapter throughout the year. For staff support you can talk with your chapter consultant or reach out to your Health & Safety team at healthandsafety@pikes.org.
