Fostering Brotherhood for All
The Fraternity’s Preamble, as crafted by our founders in 1868, directly calls each member of Pi Kappa Alpha to a life of caring for others as he cares for himself. In pursuit of that mutual benefit, the True Pike must commit to respecting the dignity of all in the spirit of brotherly love and kind feeling.
These values are alive and well in Pi Kappa Alpha today, and their significance is more critical than ever. PIKE will intentionally extend our high standards of membership to welcome the full range of diversity on our campuses, while creating and exhibiting a culture of inclusiveness and equity that brings out the best of our members, our organization, and everyone with whom we interact.
Position Statement on Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
The Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity embraces and celebrates the full range of diversity on our campuses and in our communities. We will continually strive to create an inclusive and equitable culture that brings out the best in our members, our organization, and everyone with whom we interact. Through the demonstration and promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Pi Kappa Alpha will set the standard of integrity, intellect, and achievement for our members, host institutions, and the communities in which we live.
Committing to Action
The Fraternity realizes that there is more work to be done beyond acknowledging our history and creating position statements. As we actively seek to become a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization, Pi Kappa Alpha has taken the following steps thus far:
Professional Partnerships
PIKE has partnered with the Harbor Institute to assist in the curation of DEI-specific resources, facilitate PIKE University educational sessions, and develop specialized training for chapters to incorporate into membership development programming. Our ongoing work with the Harbor Institute has included integrating DEI language and initiatives into all chapter officer materials, conducting professional staff workshops on advising undergraduate leaders in DEI, and collaborating with Harbor Group President Rasheed Ali Cromwell to host the “Be Color Brave, Not Color Blind” program at PIKE U leadership summits.
Educational Development
The Fraternity has worked with partners to develop curriculum as part of the True PIKE Experience that speaks directly to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Additionally, all undergraduate members will actively engage in a three-part DEI and Cultural Competency educational series as part of the Plaid™ Health & Safety Journey. Areas of focus throughout these courses include individual diversity, intent vs. impact, unconscious bias, intersectionality, and allyship.
DEI Chairman
PIKE has formally adopted the diversity, equity, and inclusion chairman as a recommended position within the chapter organizational structure. This chairman is tasked with overseeing the coordination of chapter-wide DEI education, supporting and promoting campus and community cultural experiences, maintaining the chapter’s DEI educational program, and facilitating open dialogues between members to foster a more inclusive environment.
Expectations, Interventions, Accountability
By advancing the principles of diversity, equity, & inclusion as a PIKE Health & Safety initiative, educational content will speak to the importance of making expectations clear, creating Fraternity- and chapter-level systems and protocols to help our members achieve these expectations, and support the development of processes for holding members accountable when they fail to meet the expectations of a True Pike.
