Community Service and Philanthropy are major parts of Pi Kappa Alpha’s vision. Successful execution of these events fulfills our obligation to our community and demonstrates our brotherhood and love for our fellow man.

Our vision is simple. Men of Pi Kappa Alpha will set the standard of integrity, intellect, and achievement for our members, host institutions, and communities in which they live. Execution of community service and philanthropy events fulfills our obligation to our communities and demonstrates our brotherhood and love for our fellow man.

Pi Kappa Alpha has long believed in student and local chapter choice when it comes to selecting preferred philanthropic or service partners. As a result, chapters and colonies of Pi Kappa Alpha fundraise for organizations that resonate the most within their chapters and their local communities. Some groups choose to fundraise for nationally known organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation, while others keep their efforts local, supporting their fire departments, hospitals, the homeless community, victims of domestic violence, and animal shelters. There are also chapters of Pi Kappa Alpha whose philanthropy events are personal. These men fundraise in memory of brothers who came before them, in honor of brothers or immediate family members who are battling illnesses, and to support students on their campuses.

For example, chapters at the University of Louisville, the University of Michigan, and Duke University have all seen great success with their respective philanthropic choices.

Since 2016, members of the chapter at the University of Louisville have hosted philanthropy events to honor the memory of a brother. Their signature event, Spin for Steven, benefits the Steven Vanover Foundation, a local nonprofit that seeks to find better treatment options and a cure for sarcoma. Over the past four years, the chapter has raised over $120,000 for the foundation.

At the University of Michigan, the chapter hosts a rivalry run in conjunction with the university’s rivalry football game against Ohio State. Chapter members run a football from one campus to the other, ending the 187-mile trek on the campus where the game is being played. In the last 16 years, the chapter has raised over $568,000 in support of the hospital’s patient and family support services program.

Students at Duke University fundraise for the local nonprofit, the I’m Not Done Yet Foundation, in memory of a PIKE chapter member. Since its inception, the chapter has raised $240,000 and is on track to surpass the $300,000 mark this year.

Service and philanthropy are not only values of Pi Kappa Alpha, they are also expectations. Each aspiring and existing chapter will have minimum expectations based on their local community for service hours and dollars raised for charity. Fortunately, the vast majority of Pi Kappa Alpha chapters well exceed these expectations.

In addition, to create a sense of camaraderie among Pi Kappa Alpha chapters and to share positive ideas and outcomes, PIKE chapters are encouraged to use CrowdChange to showcase the events and organizations they support locally.

The collective efforts across our organization annually raise over $3 million for different philanthropies, and members perform over 300,000 hours of community service.
